The holidays are finally here! What a relief it is after the hectic rush of examinations.
While it may be tempting to slip into a cycle of computer games, television and endless leisure, we would advice that students also find some constructive endeavours to fill their time. In this way, they would not dread starting school in the new academic year, but instead look forward with excitement to put some fresh perspectives or skills into use in school!
How can I EVER feel better about the school starting?
The answer lies in good planning. Mind you, not the boring kind of planning. I mean doing exciting things in your holiday which helps you be more prepared for school, and life.
Enrichment
Pick up a new sport, such as roller-blading, cable-skiing (at East Coast Park), cycling etc. Regular exercise boosts joy-inducing hormones and improves brain functioning through stimulating and increasing nerve growth factors. Carry this fun exercise into your school term can help enhance academic performance naturally!
Engaging in music or dance lessons can improve the creative center of the brain and help you think more innovatively in your life and work. You may just discover a more efficient way of balancing your school work and play.
Head start for next year
Starting on next year’s school syllabus beforehand can serve to boost the confidence of students, especially the weaker ones.
Imagine being able to breeze through classes while the rest of the class might still be scratching their heads. This will definitely help students enjoy school better.
Freedom
While these enrichment activities and tuition may be immensely beneficial to students, they should be taken in moderation. Media Corp Actress Wong Li Lin advocates giving children the freedom to day-dream, saying that it should be the way that children are allowed to grow. Therefore, we should add a word of caution to parents against cramming their children too much.
Taking your children on a short holiday overseas can help broaden their horizons by exposing them to a different culture and environment. Parents may take the opportunity to connect more with their children and engage in some quality family time.
To conclude, do take the time to think about how best you may spend your time doing something fun yet constructive. May you have a great holiday ahead!
